1. The returns at the trade deadline weren’t much … but the sign-and-trades at the end of June could have recouped something. I’m no insider, but couldn’t Don have found a partner who wanted to jump the line on Provorov who could send us stopgap to play to the right of Mateychuk for a short term contract?
2. Also I’m tempted to say I can’t blame Don for not dealing Provorov at the TDL since the returns were weak and we *almost* made the tourney. But then that brings up the goalie situation… wtf was that?! Rode Elvis way past the point of diminishing returns and brought up Jet too dang late.
So the returns at the deadline were very high. it was one of the most outrageous seller's markets we've seen in quite some time which is why I don't think Waddell added anyone and why not selling was a strong choice (one I also would have made, the team had juice and deserved to be rewarded, it's a shame they didn't get playoffs). I'm sure he wanted to add but couldn't stomach paying extra for a rental.
I don't like this logic for a few reasons because it only looks at the TDL and not the full season of time Don could have added some help in preparation for moving Provorov (which is the only logic I can see in adding both Harris and Daemon Hunt in trades). With a bit of anticipation, Waddell could have had Olli Maatta for a 3rd round pick. He could've done the same for Soucy who had a bad year but was good for Evason before. He could have paid a little extra for Dumoulin.
We know that Waddell had an offer for "a first+ for Provorov at the deadline".
On the first point, I agree. I pencilled in Provorov's UFA rights as part of some trade packages for K'Andre Miller or something of the sort. It's not a big asset but it is a unique one that another team probably couldn't have offered. In the end, it seems NYR won the day because they got Gavrikov (who is better than Provorov) and also got a good return for Miller.
Greaves rocks. So excited to watch this kid play. Dangerous to count on him as a starter but everything about his mental and skills is extremely exciting. Didn't like the goalie decision making either! If you don't trust Tarasov (such as by starting Elvis in back to back), make a move! He was only worth a 5th round pick anyway!
Thank you for correcting me re TDL. I have been listening to too many podcasts and got that wrong (and maybe it stuck in my head that Marchand was traded for a conditional 2nd.. but then again he was hurt).
Apologies if that came off strong or anything, I have a tendency of doing that.
You're all good though! That Marchand trade was a steal and looks fantastic in hindsight, easily the best deal of the deadline. He was 37 and declining but was a perfect fit for the Panthers. His contract though..... Panthers better hope they can get 2 or 3 runs out of him and that it wasn't magic.
I completely agree and have a lot of thoughts on this... I think Don needs to get his office in order. I've long thought there's somebody with an outsized voice or some data or some decision process that leads to these blunders. I only see the end result, which seems disappointing in this moment. I fully expected at least one young player getting traded possibly Sillinger or Voronkov or Johnson. I don't see that now with these moves. Who pays for the cap dump of Miles Wood? I'm still annoyed that cbj now has that contract for someone to fill Eric Robinsons role. All that said, summer is not over and apparently Ken Holland doesn't like young players so every GM should be angling for the promising youngsters. Do you remember how we roasted the Sharks GM last summer? By the end of the season I was tuning in to watch them bc while bad, they were fun to watch and clearly building something. There's probably talent out there to be had. I'm hoping Don has something more to come. I'm not super hopeful because he misread the teams needs at the TDL and added a minus player that contributed to the losing streak and these latest moves are summing up to more disappointing moves than optimistic ones but hope springs eternal. Still gonna watch and see how the team looks at the beginning. Your writing about Werenski leaving makes me sad but eventually that seems likely
It hasn't been a good streak and frankly I'm surprised the front office is all the same. Seems to me Don Waddell is working too much for a guy who has a staff full of people he should trust.
There are definitely trades to be found if he wants to! Voronkov was allegedly in the trade for Dobson. I presume Chinakhov is available and I wonder about Sillinger too. Still plenty of time for something good, let's hope this next sequence of moves is much better!
Grim stuff. But you were right to say it!
Two other things came to my mind…

Thank you. Reading this was cathartic.
